Circle The Date
1/5: vs Red Bank - The two rivals meet up as part of a Saturday quad at Shore
After a slow start a year ago, the Caseys picked up in the 2nd half of the season, winning 8 of their final 11 duals, to end a string of three consecutive losing seasons. The momentum carried into the postseason, as the team advanced five wrestlers to the Regions. With some key returners, including three District placers, and some experienced youngsters entering the lineup, RBC is looking to keep that momentum rolling into the 2019 season.
The strength of the lineup looks to be in the top, where the three returning District medal winners lurk. Senior Steven Cmielewski returned from injury in late January in time to advance to his 2nd consecutive District final. He's joined by fellow senior John Columbia and junior Aidan Meyler-McAuliffe, who both placed 3rd at Districts, and another junior, Thomas DiStefano, a 14-bout winner, to give the Caseys a strong group up top. At heavyweight, sophomore Jake Louro got some valuable experience in the lineup last year, and will be looking to take the next step in 2019.
In the middle, senior Leonard Meer is a 4-year starter and is looking to have a breakout season in his final go around for the Caseys. He provides a veteran presence in a middleweight group that will be an otherwise young group.
Down low, Andrew Lennert is another 4-year starter that has worked towards big things this year, and also will provide some good veteran leadership among an otherwise pretty young group. The newcomers down here are a promising group and have been working hard to make an immediate, positive impact in the lineup.
As mentioned, the Caseys had some positive momentum going as the season wound down last year, and are gunning to keep that going into the new season. They have some youngsters down low and in the middle, but they also have some good veterans to look to, especially with the crop in the upperweights. There are several individuals here that are capable of having big years. This is a lineup that is only going to get tougher as the season rolls on and the newcomers get more and more experience. If they develop quickly, this is a team capable of having a pretty solid year.
